How do I write an exam question?
We welcome certified practitioners to submit potential exam questions. Submitted items go through a rigorous review process by a panel of certified subject matter experts:
STEP 1: CAMPAIGN: SUBMIT QUESTION
To write an exam question, you must:
- Be certified in the program for which you sign up to write items
- Sign up to be an item writer and receive email campaign invitations and updates
- Review the Item Writing Resources
- Complete an online training program
We are not accepting applications for new item writers at this time. Please check back later.
STEP 2: ISACA INTERNAL STAFF REVIEW
Once you submit a new item, a member of our Item Development Team will review the item for adherence to ISACA's item writing guidelines.
- The ISACA staff review typically does not focus on the content of the item, but reviews may provide suggestions for alternate wording to enhance the clarity of the text.
- Items that need revisions are returned to the writer with feedback and can be resubmitted at any time before the campaign’s final deadline.
STEP 3: EXAM ITEM DEVELOPMENT WORKING GROUP
Once ISACA staff determines that an item is ready to move forward, the item will then be included for review by the CISA Exam and Item Development Working Group (EIDWG).
- The Working Group will review the content of the item a few weeks after the conclusion of the campaign.
- Final results from the EIDWG are typically available the week following the Working Group meeting.
STEP 4: EXAM BANK
Items accepted by the working group go directly into our exam banks.
- Writers are paid an honorarium and awarded two CPEs for each item accepted by the working group.
- Items that are not accepted by the Working Group are returned to the writer after the meeting with feedback from the group.
